Alana McLaughlin, the second openly transgender woman to compete in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) in the United States, won a martial arts debut in Miami.
McLaughlin is the second openly transgender woman to participate in MMA. Her debut came after the United States reviewed legislation aimed at restricting the participation of transgender athletes in sports.
“Now I am following in the footsteps of Felon. “I’m just one step away from that and I hope there will be many more after me,” said McLaughlin, referring to Fallon Fox, who in 2012 became the first transgender woman to appear in MMA.
“If we want to see more trans athletes, if we want to see more opportunities for trans children, we will have to take advantage of these spaces and do that. It’s time to normalize trans people in sports” McLaughlin told Outsports.
Announcing the winner, McLaughlin wore a T-shirt with the caption “End Trans Genocide.”
